Engineers and Conversational skills

People like options, nobody wants to have their decisions made for them. That's precisely the reason an open ended conversation keeps people interested. Why do some people are adept at conversation skills, is it something blessed and innate or is it something you can learn. I don't really know the answer.
What my point really is does your choice of career affect your ability to speak well. Well there is no doubt about it. It is like who will win a marathon, an athlete or a painter or writer(obviously if he/she is not into running).
As an engineer I have come to a conclusion that our work affects our conversation skills. We treat conversations like problems we come up during the course of our work and try to solve the conversations. Narrow down the conversation to a dead end. Nobody likes that but that is what our work trains us to do. What is the remedy? I am off to ponder upon that.
